Enjoy a Local Seafood DinnerYou can't spend any time at the Outer Banks without having a local seafood dinner. Throughout the Outer Banks, there are many great restaurants that will serve the catch of the day and cook it how you like it. You can't go wrong with an authentic seafood dinner on the Outer Banks. Many of the restaurants will prepare YOUR catch of the day for you, if you have been out fishing and don't want to cook your own catch. All you have to do is ask! View the Sunset Over the SoundAfter a long day of sightseeing, shopping, fishing or surfing, take time to relax and watch the sunset over the Sound. Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands are home to the Pamlico Sound; Manteo and Nags Head are home to the Albemarle Sound, and Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Duck and Corolla is where you will find the Currituck Sound. No matter what Sound you choose, the sunset views will be breathtaking. If you are lucky enough to catch a few late afternoon windsurfers or kiteboarders, you will be able to see their sails in the foreground as the sun drops below the horizon. Sunsets are beautiful on the Outer Banks all year round, but some of the most breathtaking orange and red sunsets are prevalent in the fall season each year. Tour the Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History CenterThe Native American Museum & Natural History Center in Frisco is full of unusual collections of Native American artifacts dating back to the 1930s. The Museum has one of the largest collections of artifacts from the Chiricahua Apache tribe, as well as several artifacts from other tribes from around the country. There is a gift shop at the museum that sells various art, crafts, jewelry, toys and books. Outside the museum, there are outdoor nature trails leading into three acres of woods. The museum is open year-round on Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family, and group rates are available. For more information, contact the Museum at (252) 995-4440. Climb the Currituck Beach LighthouseWhile you are in the northern Outer Banks, stop by the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and climb the 214 steps to the top of the lighthouse. Once at the top, you will be able to get a close-up view of the 50,000 candlepower lamp that is visible for 18 nautical miles. Much like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the stairs to the top are narrow and winding, but the unlimited views from the top are an excellent reward. Visitors may climb the lighthouse for a fee of $6, and children less than eight years old climb for free. The lighthouse is open daily from Easter through Thanksgiving. Send Outer Banks Postcards To Your Friends and FamilyAre you the lucky one among your friends and family who got to take a trip to the Outer Banks this year? Take an hour of your precious vacation time and send postcard notes to your loved ones from the Outer Banks. There are beautiful postcards sold at almost any local gift shop or grocery store and they are very affordable. Let them know you are thinking about them and that you wish they could be visiting the Outer Banks with you. If they can see a postcard of how beautiful it is, maybe you can persuade them to come along with you on your next trip to the Outer Banks! Take Your Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle on the BeachThough there is some controversy over whether it should be allowed or not, you can drive on the beach in many parts of the Outer Banks in designated off-road beach access areas. You will need to have a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle to prevent getting stuck, and you may not go over 25 mph while driving on the beach. Some places don't allow beach driving and some require permits to drive on the beach, so check with the local area officials to make sure you are following the rules. For more information, contact the National Park Service at (252) 473-2111. Go Pier Fishing Off One of the Village PiersThere are numerous fishing piers that are located throughout the Outer Banks, and many anglers prefer the piers because they are relatively cheap to use and they can get to deeper waters without going out in a boat. Croakers, spot, sea mullet, red drum and cobia are commonly caught off the piers, depending on the time of year. Each pier sells bait and tackle and most of them have gear available for rent. There are fishing piers located in Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Rodanthe, Avon and Frisco. Daily rates to fish on the pier range from $6 to $8 and some piers offer 3-day or weekly passes at discounted rates. Drive-Thru a Brew Thru Convenience StoreYou've heard of drive-thru fast food restaurants, but have you ever been to a drive-thru gas station and convenience store? The Outer Banks is home to the original Brew Thru, which is a local chain of drive-thru gas station/convenience stores where you will find friendly service, great prices and the unique Brew Thru apparel - all without having to leave the comfort of your car! There are four Brew Thru locations to serve you, located between Corolla and Nags Head. Drive thru and check them out! Visit the Wright Brothers National MemorialOn December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright (otherwise known as the Wright Brothers) soared in their homemade flying machine for more than 852 feet, staying in the air for 59 seconds. They were the first to get a powered airplane to fly in the sky. In 1932, a granite monument was built in their memory on a steep hill in the center of Kill Devil Hills, which is the same monument thousands of visitors visit each year. The site is managed by the National Park Service and there is also a visitor center, gift shop and museum. Tours and summer programs are available. Admission is $4 for adults and free for children 15 and under. For more information, contact the Wright Brothers National Memorial at (252) 441-7430. Go Hiking on the Hammock Hills Nature TrailLocated north of Ocracoke Village, the 0.75-mile Hammock Hills Nature Trail will take you on a 30-minute walk through various sections of the Island, including sand dunes, maritime forest and a salt marsh. Signs along the trail teach about various plant life surviving in the Ocracoke weather and elements. You will want to remember your camera and insect repellent before you take this hike, and don't forget that snakes may be hiding in the underbrush. The trailhead is located just across Highway 12 from the Ocracoke Campground. | Outer Banks RestaurantsNew York Pizza Pub2217 S Croatan Highway Milepost 10 Nags Head, NC 27959 Red Drum Tap House 2412 S Virginia Dare Trail Nags Head, NC 27959 Tropical Smoothie Cafe 2236 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant & Tavern 2316 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 The Ship's Wheel Restaurant 2028 S Virginia Dare Trail Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Kill Devil Grill 2008 S Virginia Dare Trail Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Dunkin' Donuts 2407 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Flying Fish Cafe 2003 S Croatan Highway Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Arby's 1901 S Croatan Highway Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Beach Road Grill 2519 S Virginia Dare Trail Nags Head, NC 27959 Big Daddy's Water Ice 1700 S Virginia Dare Trail Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Peppercorns Restaurant & Lounge 1701 S Virginia Dare Trail Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Nags Head ShoppingIPSO Facto Gallery206 E Gallery Row Nags Head, NC 27959 Lone Wolff Trading Company 210 E Gallery Row Nags Head, NC 27959 Sally Huss Gallery 300 E Driftwood Street Nags Head, NC 27959 Brew Thru Beverage Store 2203 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Morales Art Gallery 207 E Gallery Row Nags Head, NC 27959 Wings 2229 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Ben Franklin Store 2117 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Glenn Eure's Ghost Fleet Art Gallery 210 E Driftwood Street Nags Head, NC 27959 Lighthouse Gallery & Gifts 301 E Driftwood Street Nags Head, NC 27959 Food Lion 2210 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Whalebone Surf Shop 2214 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks Fudge Company 2236 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks AttractionsNorth Carolina Coastal Land Trust701 W Ocean Acres Drive Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Nags Head Woods Preserve & The Nature Conservancy 701 W Ocean Acres Drive Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Nags Head Fishing Pier 3309 S Virginia Dare Trail Nags Head, NC 27959 Jockey's Ridge State Park 300 W Carolista Drive Nags Head, NC 27959 Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 98 NC Highway 12 Nags Head, NC 27959 Wright Brothers National Memorial 800 Colington Road Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Avalon Fishing Pier 2111 N Virginia Dare Trail Milepost 6 Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 The Lost Colony 1409 National Park Drive Manteo, NC 27954 Roanoke Island Festival Park 1 Festival Park Manteo, NC 27954 Outer Banks History Center 1 Festival Park Manteo, NC 27954 Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse 207 Queen Elizabeth Avenue Manteo, NC 27954 North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island 374 Airport Road Manteo, NC 27954 Outer Banks ActivitiesScoot-Hers/Sandy Beach Tours2300 S Croatan Highway Suite #102 Nags Head, NC 27959 Nags Head Bowling & Billiards 201 W Satterfield Landing Drive Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks Gearworks Laser Tag and Fun Center 2406 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Coastal Helicopters, LLC PO Box 715 Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks Fishing Charters 200 Quail Lane Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Fine Line Charters 105 S Colony Court Nags Head, NC 27959 Galaxy Golf 2914 S Virginia Dare Trail Nags Head, NC 27959 Destination Fun 1217 S Croatan Highway Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 Outer Banks Centre for Dance 2910 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks Family YMCA 3000 S Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959 Centro Familiar Hispano 113 W Villa Dunes Drive Nags Head, NC 27959 Outer Banks Daredevils 100 Veterans Drive Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 |
